[Q]Cev 1.0.2 (CEDICT viewer) readme file

About
This is an application for using CEDICT-style formatted files as chinese-english dictionaries. Usage is rather simple and I think you will get a point by yourself. Just will say some tips:


How to use CEDICT file with this program
  1. You must convert your CEDICT dictionary file to UTF-16 (UCS-2) encoding. It can be done with uniconv program (search it here: http://ftp.cc.monash.edu.au/pub/nihongo/). Converting is simple... Assume that your CEDICT file is in GB2312 encoding, named "c:\utils\cedict\cedict.gb" and your downloaded uniconv.exe is "c:\utils\uniconv\uniconv.exe". Press "Start" -> "Run" and type "cmd" to invoke windows console. In that console type "c:\utils\uniconv\uniconv.exe GB2312 c:\utils\cedict\cedict.gb UCS-2 c:\utils\cedict\cedict.ced". That's all - it will be converted to UTF-16 (UCS-2) text encoding. Place resulting cedict.ced file in QCev program's folder. Sure - you can use any other method to convert file to UTF-16 e.g. open it in Microsoft's Word program, "Save as...", select plain text format and then select Unicode encoding.
  2. You must create index file for that CEDICT dictionary file. To do this - use cevidx program (it must be included in QCev archive). Assume that you've unpacked QCev archive in "c:\utils\qcev" ... Then in console type "c:\utils\qcev\cevidx.exe +desc +pinyin +name c:\utils\qcev\cedict.ced", after creation - program will ask you for name of this dictionary - you can type something that you like, e.g. "cedict (gb)". Ok ... index file will be named cedict.ced.idx in this example. You can read meaning of +desc, +pinyin, +name options invoking "cevidx.exe" without arguments.
  3. Launch QCev program ... That's all ... It will try to use all CEDICT files with indexes that lays in program's folder. In welcome screen - it will show you loaded dictionaries names. You can type something (in chinese) in input field and press Refresh button to search that word(s) in them.

How to use Unihan database file with this program
  1. Download unihan.txt (or unihan.zip) text file from http://www.unicode.org/Public/UNIDATA/
  2. Create unihan.idc index file for it with cevidx utility. Do it invoking "cevidx.exe --unihan unihan.txt" from console.
  3. Place both unihan.txt and unihan.idc files in QCev program's folder. Run QCev and check "Show unfo from Unihan database" option in it settings. Then - program will show info from unihan.txt file about first typed CJK character.

Some notes
  1. CEDICT file can be more complex than original format. Example of string is here: word word2 word3 ... wordX [transcription] /translation1 | examples1/ translation2 | examples2/ ... / where 'word' is a chinese word, 'word2', 'word3' - it's another forms (like traditional, simplified and whatever you want, but cevidx index only 1st of them if no +asis option selected), 'transcription' - a pinyin string, also can be with tone marks instead of numbers, 'translation' and 'examples' can also contain some tags: [br] - new line, [is]Text[ie] - italic green, [bs]Text[be] - bold.
  2. You can type unicode characters with their decimal or hexadecimal numbers in input field like this: "&#YYYY;" (YYYY - decimal number), "&#xZZZZ;" (ZZZZ - hexadecimal number).
  3. Cevidx utility will index english and russian words from word's translations when invoked with +desc argument. It will not index words with length less than 4 symbols.
  4. Cevidx utility will index pinyin entries when invoked with +pinyin argument. By default - numbers, (some) tone marks and spaces will be deleted from index - it means that "mo4 sheng1" will be indexed as "mosheng". But you can use option +pinnum to make numbers also indexed.
